Hallux Valgus (Bunion)
Hallux valgus is the medial deviation of the first metatarsal and lateral deviation of the great toe. It remains debatable on the causes of this condition. While it can be inherited, it can also be caused by wearing narrow, pointed shoes and high heels, excessive pronation, injury, arthritis, and weight gain. When the big toe joint becomes enlarged, pressure and friction can cause discomfort as it rubs against the shoe. Women are more prone to this deformity than men. People with hallux valgus often present with callus formation at the second metatarsal head, which can become painful. This is due to not wanting to put pressure on the big toe joint.
Pedorthic applications include:
- Properly fit shoes with depth and a wide toe box
- Ball and ring stretcher at location of the bunion
- Metatarsal pads
- Medial stabilizers to control overpronation
- Function orthotics
