Hammertoes
A hammertoe occurs when the second, third, or fourth toes bend at the middle joint. It is often caused as a result of wearing shoes that are too small. The foot elongates when we walk and if unable can cause several foot problems. The toes can be either rigid or flexible. Corns or calluses may develop on the top of the affected joint or at the tips of the toes due to pressure. Surgery is sometimes needed, however, toe stretches and appropriate footwear can help in most cases.
Pedorthic applications include:
- Properly fit shoes with depth
- Excavations under the plantarflexed (flexed downward) metatardal heads or at the tips of the toes
- Metatarsal pads if the toes are flexible
- Full steel shanks if the toes are not flexible
- Toe crests
- Accommodative orthotics
