Peroneal Tendinitis

The peroneal tendons run along the lateral ankle bone and help stabilize the ankle and foot. Peroneal tendon injuries are usually due to overloading the lateral side of the foot at heel strike. The heel strike is the initial contact to the ground when walking. The peroneal tendons are most commonly stretched with inversion of the ankle. When the ankle is sprained it affects the lateral ligaments of the foot, but sometimes can cause an injury or tear of the peroneal tendons. This is often misdiagnosed and later found after the patient continues to experience pain. It is important to frequently check the lateral heel wear of your shoes to ensure there is no significant breakdown of the sole.

Pedorthic applications include:

  • Properly fit shoes with a firm lateral heel counter
  • Lateral heel wedge
  • Lateral flare
  • Functional orthotics
