Morton's Neuroma
Morton's neuroma is a benign nerve enlargement that usually develops in between the third and fourth metatarsals. Symptoms include intense pain, swelling, burning, numbness, and a tingling sensation in the forefoot area. Ninety percent of neuromas are found in women more so because of the types of shoes worn. Shoes that are high heeled, too small, or too narrow can contribute to the formation of a neuroma. Pain increases while standing or walking but still may be felt when non-weight bearing.
Pedorthic applications may include:
- Properly fitted shoes with depth
- 3/8" to 1/2" of empty space at the end of longest toe
- Possible wide width to ensure no pressure
- Shoes that have toe spring and are not flat
- Rocker soles
- Full length shank
- Functional foot orthotics
- Metatarsal pads
